BETH GREENBERG / STAGE DIRECTOR & DRAMATURG

Acclaimed by Opera News as “a sure theatrical hand,” Beth Greenberg is known for her stage work with the New York City Opera. For the Lincoln Center company she directed Turandot and Tales of Hoffmann, as well as revivals of Der Rosenkavalier, Tosca, Intermezzo, La Traviata and La Bohème. Across New York's harbor — on the historic ship Mary A. Whalen moored in Red Hook, Brooklyn — she directed a groundbreaking, site specific production of Il Tabarro.

Greenberg is also known for developing and directing new American operas. She collaborates on all creative phases, from first libretto reads to fully staged world premieres.

Recent world premieres include three operas by Lori Laitman (The Scarlet Letter; Uncovered; The Three Feathers); This Little Light of Mine (Carter) for Santa Fe Opera; and Companionship (Peters).

Greenberg’s productions have been seen worldwide with Carmen in Tokyo and Tosca in Lima, Peru. Across America she has staged works for Opera Colorado, Berkshire Opera Festival, Boston’s Odyssey Opera, Fort Worth Opera, Kentucky Opera, Crested Butte Music Festival, and the Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice, among others.

As a dramaturg, Greenberg recently contributed to vocal works Mass in Exile and Requiem in the Light (Buller/Lax), published by E.C. Schirmer. She is also the story advisor for John Lewis: Good Trouble, commissioned by Cincinnati Opera.

A Fulbright award brought her to Germany where she apprenticed with Götz Friedrich at Deutsche Oper Berlin. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan School of Music and Brooklyn College.
